Audio Signal Tracer
Make a battery-powered probe with DC blocking, input limiting, volume control, and a small speaker for low-voltage audio troubleshooting.
Safety first, always.
ElectroLab AI teaches theory, low-voltage electronics, and planning concepts. Mains voltage, switchboards, fixed wiring, high-current systems, and legal electrical work must only be performed by licensed electricians where required.

Before the first wire
Know the build before you power it.
Only probe low-voltage audio circuits with the device powered by its own battery.
Use an input capacitor so DC from the circuit under test cannot enter the tracer amplifier directly.
Clip the tracer ground to the circuit ground before touching the probe tip.
Do not use this probe on mains, tube amp high voltage, or unknown live equipment.

8 parts groups to gather
Check every spec
| Qty | Part | Exact spec | What it does | Inspect before use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | LM386 module or small powered speaker board | Battery powered, line input | Makes weak audio audible. | Verify supply polarity and input ground. |
| 1 | Probe tip | Insulated test probe or banana probe | Touches signal points. | Only the very end should be exposed. |
| 1 | Input capacitor | 100 nF-1 uF film capacitor | Blocks DC from the tested circuit. | Non-polar type preferred. |
| 1 | Input resistor | 47-100 kohm series | Limits probe loading and mistakes. | Measure before fitting. |
| 1 | Volume control | 10 kohm audio pot | Controls loudness and protects your ears. | Find the wiper with resistance mode. |
| 1 | Speaker or earpiece | 8 ohm speaker for LM386 module | Lets you hear the signal. | DC resistance is sensible. |
| 1 | Battery, switch, and enclosure | 9 V clip, SPST switch | Makes the tracer portable. | No battery terminals can short in the case. |
| 1 | Ground clip | Insulated lead with alligator clip | References the circuit under test. | Continuity from clip to tracer ground. |
Build boundary
This tracer is for low-voltage audio signal paths. It must not be used on mains, switch-mode primary circuits, tube amp plates, or unknown high-voltage points.
Part modules vary. Read the markings and datasheet for the exact board in front of you before applying power.
